I read and write a lot about our world’s ills and the spiritual warfare we face. This is all very true and needs our attention. But there is also another important aspect I want you to be aware of in each day. That is the beauty and the demonstrations of love that surround us.
Living in the greater Washington, DC area this Spring we are beginning to get the daily reports of the blooming progress of the Japanese Cherry trees that surround the tidal basin. They are truly beautiful in the Spring. I suspect you can name others as the weather begins to get warmer and the daylight hours longer. But there is another very special one that I witnessed last week in a medical office. Perhaps an unusual place to see beauty, but it really can be there.
I had occasion to be in our local medical lab waiting for a blood test. The room was full of people waiting for their turn, a time easy to get frustrated with a long wait for a simple procedure. An older gentleman in rather scruffy apparel came in with a young girl, obviously a Down’s Syndrome child. They took their seats in the midst of the crowded chairs. The gentleman’s care for the child is what caught my attention. He talked to her gently, showed her a few pages of a small book. and occasionally gently stroked her hair as they waited for their turn. I don’t know them. I know nothing of their relationship. I likely will never see them again. But the obvious parental love and care he showed for the girl was absolutely beautiful. An image that touched my day, and one that I will long remember.
Look around today and tomorrow and the days after. See if you do not also see images of beauty, goodness, and love. They are there and they can touch your day, too.
Blessings dear friends,
Pastor Irv
